Seven persons were feared dead as a two- storey building collapsed at Ogidi, near Onitsha on Wednesday.
A source said three persons died on the spot while four died on their way to the hospital.
Many others sustained varying degree of injuries.
The two-storey building was still under construction at Ikenga Ndiagu village, in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state and trapped the workers therein.
The building which was at the second floor stage, collapsed at about 4.30 p.m.
The copses of the victims were deposited at Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital Morgue, Ogidi, while those who sustained injuries were admitted at the intensive care unit of the hospital.
As of the time of filing this report at about 8pm sources told our correspondent that rescue teams were still battling to see if more victims could be recovered from the debris.
It was gathered that its landlord whose name was given by security agencies as Marcel Amumba was helping the police.
Amumba was said to be inspecting work at the second floor of the building when it collapsed and he sustained minor injuries but was treated before finding himself in the police custody.
Efforts to reach the Divisional Police Officer at Ogidi, Hassan Musa (CSP), proved abortive as his phone was not going through but a senior police officer at the station who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incident.
He added that investigation was still in progress.
