There was jubilation at the Riocentro Pavillion Six when Nigerian sprinters were announced winners of a relay silver medal.
Nigeria aquired the medal following the upgrade of the bronze won by Franca Idoko, Halimat Ismaila, Gloria Kemasuode and Oludamola Osayomi in the women’s 4x100m quartet, behinde Russia and Belgium who clinched gold and silver respectively at the Beijing 2008 Olympics .
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the International Olympic Committee IOC at the Riocentro Pavillion Six, venue of the ill-fated super heavyweight boxing match between Efe Ajagba of Nigeria and Ivan Dychko.
Russia Sprinter Yulia Chermoshanskaya who failed a drug test (stanozolol and turinabol) was disqualified and stripped of the event’s gold medal along with her team-mates Yulia Gushchina, Alexandra Fedoriva and Evgeniya Polyakova.
