The duo surprised the audience with a medley of Parton’s “Jolene” and “9 to 5”
Music superstars Katy Perry and Dolly Parton united on stage for a rousing performance of Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” at Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards.
Clad in sparkles and cowboy boots, Perry and Parton soared through their rendition of the track before the duo surprised the audience with a medley of Parton’s beloved tunes, “Jolene” and “9 to 5” as pink neon lights read “Dolly & Katy” behind them.
“MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED,” Perry tweeted ahead of the performance. “I shall remember though that I am but one sequin on this living legend’s costume!”
Perry also presented Parton with the country singer’s eighth ACM honor, the Tex Ritter Award, for producing and narrating the TV movie Coat of Many Colors, which predominantly features country music as it tells the tale of Parton’s childhood upbringing.
Parton and Perry previously announced their ACM Awards duet in March, following news that the former will soon embark on her largest tour in 25 years. The Pure & Simple with Dolly Parton’s Biggest Hits tour will visit 60 cities in the U.S. and Canada. The tour’s accompanying album, Pure & Simple, will feature all new material, and is slated for release later this year. Perry has not released new music since 2013’s Prism.
