Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has ordered the sealing off of Lekki Gardens estate until further notice.
Speaking yesterday when he visited the Lekki Gardens in Ikate Elegushi where a five-storey building collapsed last week killing 35 people, the governor said the state government would soon embark on an audit of all buildings in the state to ascertain those with planning approvals and evaluate the physical development against the approved building plans.
Ambode who expressed his unhappiness over the tragedy, also directed that structural stability test be carried out on all other buildings constructed by Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited in the state, whether occupied or not, to ascertain their structural stability.
The governor who said the responsibility of government was to ensure the safety of lives and property of its citizens, assured them that there would no longer be any sacred cows, adding, “If there is failure of duty, there will be sanctions.”
