According to Punch News reports,no fewer than 60 buildings worth millions of naira were destroyed by a rainstorm in the Gaga area of Oke-Aro in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Friday night.
While some of the houses were partially affected, many had their roofs completely ripped off by the rainstorm.
Also, some vehicles were trapped under felled trees as a result of the rainstorm.
It was gathered that some religious buildings were badly damaged.
Following the incident, an eyewitness told newsmen that the entire community was thrown into total darkness as many electricity poles were also damaged.
As they counted their losses, residents of the area said the state government, the National Emergency Management Agency and other stakeholders should come to their aid.
The head of the community, Mr. Oluwole Omotosho, who spoke with journalists on Saturday urged Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and other relevant agencies to assist the community with relief materials.
Omotosho said, “This incident came to us as a shock. It is very unfortunate that this could happen to us at this time when things are not easy in the country. That is why we are calling on our state government to assist. We are begging them.”
He further explained that the residents had contacted lawmakers representing them in the Ondo State House of Assembly and the National Assembly to come to their aid.
