Clouded leopards are one of the smaller of the wild cats with a beautiful mottled coat. They have relatively short legs and spend most of their lives in trees where they catch birds with great agility.
Thought to be the closest living relative to the smilodon they have abnormally large teeth and relatively short legs. They are endangered everywhere and are almost certainly extinct in Taiwan. It is the usual story for wild cats in Asia – its beautiful pelt is its death sentence along with the fact that it is eaten in some places. Current numbers are less than 10000 and falling as deforestation continues. It is currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN.
