Manchester United supporters have described their terror after Old Trafford was evacuated moments before kick-off in a suspected bomb scare.
United’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth was abandoned shortly after 3pm after a suspicious package was found in the north-west quadrant of Old Trafford.
It is understood the package was a mobile phone strapped to a gas pipe inside the toilets.
Two stands were evacuated while other supporters were told to stay in their seats as a “code red” announcement was made over the public address system.
Evacuated fans were asked to wait for further announcements outside the ground.
The match was then abandoned and remaining fans evacuated as supporters were asked to leave the area.
A controlled explosion was carried out a short time later after army bomb disposal experts were called to the scene.
Some fans said they were forced to scale fences and steep slopes to get out of the area as word spread of a possible terror incident.
Many exit routes away from the stadium were sealed off as police dealt with the scene causing a mass of supporters to build outside the ground.
United fan Alex Day said: “There was an announcement about half two asking for the safety officer to attend then we were told to evacuate and the game was delayed for 45 minutes.

“After that there was little communication until people started whisper of a bomb.
“At that point the game was abandoned and we headed for the bridge to find it fenced off and that’s when people started climbing and moving fences.”
A controlled explosion has now been carried out inside the stadium after the army’s bomb squad were called to the scene.
Jake Mills, 25, added: “Everyone was thinking ‘what was going on?’ but there was no moment of panic at first because security staff didn’t know what was going on either.
“That was when everything changed.
It was relaxed until then, the Bournmouth fans were still singing because it’s there away day, but when the code red was announced people realised it was serious.
“Other fans spoke of their horror after making their way out of the ground.”
Richard Greenhouse said: “Scary day at Old Trafford today. Just got to the ground when they closed it off and evacuated. Bomb disposal unit has just arrived.”
Paisley Harrison said: “Nothing more scary being sat & seeing half the stadium being evacuated. Horrible experinece!”
United midfielder Ander Herrera spoke from inside the stadium saying players would be the ‘last to leave the ground’.
Speaking on Spanish radio, Herrera said: “We’re still in the dressing room, seems we’ll be the last to leave. There’s been nerves and tension.”
