Komodo Dragon babies instinctively climb to the trees within 2–3 days of hatching.

Adult Komodos cannot climb trees.

The reason Komodo babies flee to the trees is that after a 2–3 day period of time and sometimes sooner, they become open season for the adults, including their mother, in the event she or others gets the post-partum munchies and is too lazy to go on a hunt.

If we are going for the “Greatest parental failure of the year” award, I don’t think it would be the parent that abandons their baby-

I think it would be the parent that literally eats their baby… Out of sheer laziness.
